DEATH: MANSONVILLE - The death from a heart attack of Mrs. Edith A. Cowan, of Mansonville, occurred on December 1 at the home of her
DEATH: daughter, Mrs. Merton Bailey, Highwater. She was 68 years of age.
DEATH: The former Edith Amelia Aiken was the daughter of Alonzo Aiken and Mary Jersey. She was born April 7, 1896, at Glen Sutton,
DEATH: where she spent her younger years and attended school. She lived for a time in Abercorn, and moved to Mansonville in 1922 at
DEATH: the time of her marriage to Robert Francis Cowan, of Mansonville.
DEATH: Since then she has been continually active in community activities particularly in the work of the Mansonville United Church.
DEATH: She has served at various times as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School secretary-treasurer, organist, and was still a member
DEATH: of the choir at the time of her death. Also she was holding the position of secretary of the United Church Women of
DEATH: Mansonville, an office which she held for many years. She was a charter member of Owl's Head Chapter No. 35 O.E.S. and held
DEATH: office every year since she joined until a year ago.
DEATH: Mrs. Cowan was predeceased by her husband on February 4, 1964. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Frances, Mrs. Merton E.
DEATH: Bailey; four grandsons; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Bailey of Mansonville; and a brother, Arthur A. Aiken, of North Troy, Vt.

DEATH: After her marriage she lived in several different towns in New Hampshire, Vermont, and the Province of Quebec. She made her
DEATH: home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. McLean, in Highwater, Que., during her last years.
DEATH: Although she regularly attended the United Church in Mansonville and its U.C.W. at the time of the death her membership with
DEATH: the United Church of Christ, North Troy, Vt., had not been transferred to the Mansonville church.
DEATH: She was active member of the U.C.W. for many years and a Past President of the United Church Ladies Aid previous to her taking
DEATH: up residence in the United States. She belonged to the Golden Age Club of Mansonville and was a Charter Member of the Owl's
DEATH: Head Chapter No. 35, Order of the Eastern Star in Mansonville in 1947, having been the first Associate Matron and becoming
DEATH: Worthy Matron in 1949, sharing the East with her husband.

DEATH: union were born 4 children: Audrey, who died in infancy;
DEATH: Morris, Ardis and Verna. Her husband passed away in
DEATH: September of 1939. Mable brought up her children with the
DEATH: help of relatives and friends.
DEATH: In October of 1945 she married Perley Button of Glen
DEATH: Sutton; to them was born one living daughter, Patricia.
DEATH: Perley passed away in 1965 after they had moved to
DEATH: Abercorn, where she brought up her younger daughter.
DEATH: Mabel joined the Mansonville Baptist Church at an early age
DEATH: and always attended service faithfully. She loved music
DEATH: and often filled in as church organist. It gave her great
DEATH: joy to play the piano for a good old-fashioned hymn sing at
DEATH: home, at the neighbours and family gatherings.
DEATH: She was a devoted mother and grandmother, a good neighbour
DEATH: who endeared herself to all her acquaintances.
DEATH: In 1969 Mabel went to live with her daughter Verna in
DEATH: Montreal to help her care for her family.
DEATH: Mabel leaves to mourn her loss one son, Morris, and wife,
DEATH: Marie, of Danville, Virginia; daughters Ardis and husband,
DEATH: Walter Fuller of Brownville Jct., Maine; Verna Lyons of
DEATH: Montreal; and Patricia and husband James Young of Orlando,
DEATH: Florida; step-children Jennie and husband Donald Hayes of
DEATH: Richford, Vt., Dorothy anbd husband, Graydon Mitson of
DEATH: Cowansville; and Clair Button of Sutton. Also a brother,
DEATH: Harold Aiken and wife Verlie of Dunkin and sister Evelyn

DEATH: The body rested at the Desourdy-Wilson funeral parlor in

DEATH: On Saturday, November 22nd at 1:45 pm the family gathered
DEATH: for prayers and then proceeded to the Baptist Church. The
DEATH: service was conducted by Pastor Walter Stairs, of Knowlton
DEATH: assisted by Rev. Judith Perry of the United Church. One
DEATH: hymn 'When All My Labours and Trials Are o'er' - a
DEATH: favourite of the deceased - was sung accompanied on the
DEATH: organ by Marilyn Stairs. Mr. Stairs delivered a message of
DEATH: hope and spoke words of comfort to all.
DEATH: Bearers were 5 grandsons: George Mitson, Cowansville;
DEATH: Bobby, Billy, Dave and Dennis Lyons of Montreal; and one
DEATH: son-in-law, Graydon Mitson of Cowansville.
DEATH: After burial in the Mansonville Cemetery beside her first
DEATH: husband, all gathered in the church hall where lunch was
DEATH: served.
